Some legal cases leave an indelible mark; we find it hard to believe the outcome could ever have been in dispute. Such as Sally Challen winning her appeal to overturn her conviction for the murder of her coercively controlling husband. Or when victims of serial rapist John Worboys successfully took the Metropolitan Police to court for their investigative failures. Then there was the case of the women caught up in the ‘spy cops’ scandal – women deceived into forming long-term relationships with men later revealed to be undercover police officers. The success of these and others, all with renowned feminist lawyer Harriet Wistrich acting for them, is proof that only by demanding better justice will we bring about important change.
Sister in Law delves into these and other examples of her hard-won cases, emerging with the devastating conclusion that the law is not fit for purpose for half the population.
Harriet Wistrich is the founder and director of the Centre for Women's Justice and a solicitor of over 25 years’ experience.
