Andrew Ziminski
Church Going
In conversation with Christopher Somerville

The quietness of churches today is misleading. In the past they were more likely to be the busiest and most prominent building in the community; to understand what went on in a church is to have a key to the secrets of the past. Andrew Ziminski, who has spent decades as a stonemason and church conservator, holds that key. Andrew lives and works in Frome, but his craft has taken him into some of the greatest churches and cathedrals in Britain, including the tower of Salisbury Cathedral and the dome of St Paul’s. His knowledge of and passion for his subject make him a perfect guide, not just to explain the flying buttresses, rood screens and chancels but also to share the story of the community which clustered around the church and for whom it was a vital hub.
An expert on the architecture of our fascinating churches, Andrew is equally at home with what they stand for: places of worship and oases of quiet reflection of course but also somewhere to gather and communicate.
