Not long after the last American troops leave Vietnam, Anh, Thanh and Minh flee their village and embark on a perilous boat journey to Hong Kong. Their parents and younger siblings travel in another vessel, one that fails to survive the crossing.
Now alone in the world, the trio navigate refugee camps and resettlement centres to reach Thatcher’s Britain where they must somehow build new lives with only each other for support. Is that enough in a place that appears not to want them?
The voices of Anh, Thanh and Minh are deftly interwoven with that of an unknown researcher following their story and their lost brother, Dao, who seems to accompany them from some place between the living and the dead.
Wandering Souls paints a heart-wrenching portrait of a family in unimaginable adversity. Heralding the arrival of an essential new voice in fiction, it was shortlisted for the Waterstones Debut Prize 2023.
