As the Tories faced the voters in July, leading political commentator Geoffrey Wheatcroft argued that the party was facing not just the loss of government but also an existential crisis. The most electorally successful party in the history of modern Europe, the Tories were in power for 85 of the past 135 years. In 2019 they won their largest parliamentary majority in more than 30 years.  What went wrong after that?

Geoffrey Wheatcroft has written not just about the collapse of the party but the apparent shattering of its very foundations. The Tories’ ancient instinct for survival appears to have deserted them, along with any concern for the public good, leaving in its place a prevailing atmosphere of dissension and vicious feuding. The fabric of the party, he suggests, is frayed beyond repair.
