June 1944. German Armed Forces suffer their greatest ever defeat.

But, despite the myths that remain today about the triumph on the Normandy beaches, it was events along the 2000-km Eastern Front that delivered the knockout blow. More than two million Red Army soldiers faced 500,000 Germans to avenge their defeat in Operation Barbarossa three years earlier: 28 of Hitler’s 32 divisions were lost; the Wehrmacht was defeated.

Jonathan Dimbleby draws on previously untranslated sources - many from ‘ordinary’ soldiers – to describe this momentous struggle while also explaining the unusual roles played by deception, the partisans, and the war within a war in Ukraine. The gripping narrative sets the drama of the relationships between Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin against the history being created on the battlefield and illustrates how his victories in 1944 enabled the Soviet leader to dictate the post-war settlement and lay the foundations for the Cold War.
