Acting on impulse and inspired by the late Russell Norman’s book on Venice, Sophie Grigson - cook, food writer and television presenter with more than 20 books and 11 television series to her name - simply piled her possessions into her purple car and moved to Puglia!
Home is now the small town of Ceglie Messapica from where, still in her trusty purple car, she travelled along the coastal instep of southern Italy, visiting the little fishing ports, exploring the long sandy beaches and rocky coves, and discovering the wild hills of Basilicata. Then it was on into Calabria’s high Sila, famed for its chestnuts and mushrooms, before ending up in the bergamot orchards clustering around Reggio Calabrio. Along her way she charted the local delicacies, ingredients and producers and, through her brilliantly described recipes and stories, she immerses you in the beauty, culture, food and characters of southern Italy.
