Making the Weather

Some politicians leave the arena much as they entered it - with little more than a faint trace of their time in office. Others most definitely leave their mark. Vernon Bogdanor, Professor of Government at the Institute of Contemporary British History, King’s College, London, has selected six post-war politicians who have exerted an outsized influence on the political life of the UK: an influence greater in fact than that of most prime ministers. The cast of characters described in Making the Weather consists of three from the left – Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan, Roy Jenkins, Tony Benn - and three from the right – Enoch Powell, Keith Joseph, Nigel Farage.
Although very different figures in many ways, each came to dominate the political landscape, often for a period of years. From immigration to Europe to the NHS, the issues and causes that brought these men to prominence are still of considerable contemporary relevance.
