This Book Is The Business

10 September 202510 September 2025

Congratulations to innovative academic Tim Minshall who has been long listed for the Financial Times and Schroders Business Book of the Year award.

His book Your Life is Manufactured, subtitled How We Make Things, Why It Matters and How We Can Do It Better, is in the category Growth.

Minshall takes an eye-opening journey through the world of manufacturing, arguing that if consumers lose touch with everything that is produced, the system will become dirtier and more fragile.

He points out that, in simple terms, thousands of litres of water are needed to make a pair of jeans, while our smart phone components travel more than six times around the world before reaching their destination.

The overall winner will be announced on 3 December, with the top prize of £30k going to the book judged to have provided the most compelling and enjoyable insight into modern business issues.

This is his second award nomination this year as he is also on the shortlist for the Royal Society Trivedi Science Book Prize, whose winner will be announced on 1 October.

Tim Minshall is at the Festival on Friday 25 October at 2pm.
