justice for war crimes

26 September 202526 September 2025

Will we ever see Vladimir Putin or Benjamin Netanyahu on trial, asks Steve Crawshaw in  Prosecuting the Powerful.

As someone who has devoted his career to the pursuit of international justice, working for the likes of Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Freedom From Torture, he replies with the answer that the possibilities of justice have been transformed.

His book – a blend of eyewitness reporting and gripping history – includes recent stories from the front lines of justice in Ukraine, Israel/Palestine and at The Hague, and he looks back at his earlier in person encounters with Slobodan Milosevic.

If survivors of war crimes are to receive justice for the crimes committed against them, he says, governments must  have the courage to support prosecutions of  those who commit atrocities, whether they are opponents or allies,.

Steve Crawshaw is in conversation with David Lister on Thursday 23 October at 7.45pm
