The adventures of a young 18^th century naturalist, philosopher and revolutionary are brought to life in The Traveller, a richly illustrated biography by award-winning author Andrea Wulf.

George Forster was an adventurer who journeyed to the far reaches of the known world, straddling the Enlightenment and Romanticism, and whose radical ideas about humanity, equality and freedom challenged the worldviews of his age.

His life burned short and bright. At 10, travelling with his father into Russia, he became a botanist. At 17, he joined Cook’s second voyage in 1772, and it was his published account of this expedition that made him famous. By 39 he was dead, an exile in Paris during the Reign of Terror.

He travelled throughout his life, exploring the diversity of nature, peoples and cultures, becoming feted across Europe.
