We all know what Margaret Thatcher, aka the Iron Lady, stood for, don’t we?
Or do we?
She had a dictatorial stye. Didn’t she? She transformed our economy. Did she? She brought about the end of the Cold War, did she not? And supported Apartheid in South Africa.
Iain Dale is an accomplished broadcaster, presenting his own daily radio show on LBC, and several podcasts, including Where Politics Meets History.
As he explains no Brits under 53 today will even have been old enough to vote while she was in power and will therefore have a sketchy knowledge of her time. Which means that most of these well-known myths about Mrs Thatcher and what she stood for are just that: myths.
This year, a century after the ‘iron’ lady’s birth, is an appropriate time to reconsider her legacy and reintroduce the woman behind the steely exterior to a new generation who will discover the truth for themselves.
