Literary Lunch Event
When James Canton moved to the country, he discovered a two-acre patch of field which would make an ideal rewilding spot. Or rather, bearing in mind its size, something smaller and less ambitious.
Today he describes how he ‘rewilded’ the field: dug a pond, forged meadowland, created habitats for birds and insects, and encouraged flowers and plants that support pollinators and wildlife. Canton’s small grassy space soon buzzed again with life.
Traditional rewilding is impossible on the scale of a garden or window box. But even in these spaces we can support nature. A single window box planted with pollinator-friendly flowers can provide a mini-habitat for honeybees; a tower block with a window box on every balcony becomes an acre of bee-friendly ecosystem.
Renaturing shows how the concept of rewilding can be adopted by everyone. We can all be involved in caring for and restoring the natural world.
