Success Story
An author who was twice shortlisted in the Short Story competition is about to see publication of his debut novel The Margaret Code.
Richard Hooton entered the competition seven years ago with two stories – both shortlisted – which gave him the confidence to continue writing. These were Mr Flint and the Fire, and The Fire Breathing Dragon of Salford.
This led to him being able to get an agent and a book deal, and he is now looking forward to publication of his first novel on 10 April by Sphere, an imprint of Little Brown.
A voice-led whodunnit, The Margaret Code is a crime thriller that follows the story of 89-year-old Margaret whose failing memory holds the key to the murder investigation taking place on her street.
Richard studied English literature at the University of Wolverhampton before becoming a journalist and going on to work in communications. He has won numerous prizes for his short fiction.
“Being shortlisted for your competition was a huge boost and helped validate and instil confidence in my writing. Thank you for all your hard work in organising the competition to provide such opportunities, and in keeping it running.”
