Unravelling Fragile Minds

21 October 202621 October 2026

Dr Gavin Francis, who is speaking at the Festival on Thursday, has just been shortlisted for the prestigious Saltires – Scotland’s National Book Awards – in the non-fiction category.

Tickets are still available for his session tomorrow (Thursday 22 October) for his talk at 6pm.

In his latest book The Unfragile Mind, the doctor draws on conversations with patients and colleagues to explore the chequered history of psychiatry.

He draws on more than 30 years of practice, with an interest in mental and ill health, and the problems he has encountered daily. He addresses mood disorders, trauma, anxiety and addictions.

With up to a quarter of young people in the UK now suffering from a mental  disorder, and more than one in four adults prescribed psychiatric medication, he says a new approach is needed.

His prescription – curiosity, kindness, humility and hope.
